Leaving the ADF doesn’t mean navigating healthcare alone

Transitioning from the Australian Defence Force is one of life’s biggest milestones. Alongside new career opportunities and lifestyle changes comes another important shift: taking control of your own healthcare.

While you’re serving, your healthcare is managed through Defence. Once you transition, that responsibility moves to you. Understanding how Medicare, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) and private health insurance fit together can feel unfamiliar, particularly when you’re already managing so many other changes.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it all out on your own.

Understanding your healthcare after service

After leaving Defence, Medicare becomes the foundation of your healthcare. Depending on your circumstances, you may also be eligible for support through DVA for service-related conditions. Many former serving members also choose private health insurance to complement their healthcare , helping with services Medicare doesn’t generally cover, such as dental, physiotherapy and optical, while also providing greater choice and flexibility for hospital treatment.
Understanding how Medicare, DVA and private health insurance work together before you leave the ADF can help you avoid unexpected costs, minimise gaps in care and make more informed decisions about your future health.

Planning ahead also means taking practical steps before discharge, such as completing medical and dental appointments, finding a local GP, and ensuring your medical records are up to date and understanding what ongoing care you may need after service. These simple actions can make your transition significantly smoother.

How Defence Health supports your transition

For more than 70 years, Defence Health has been supporting the Defence community. We understand that transitioning extends beyond leaving the defence force, to navigating an entirely new healthcare system with confidence.

That’s why we’ve developed dedicated transition resources to support serving members before, during and after discharge.

Our online Transition Gateway provides practical, easy-to-understand guidance on topics including Medicare, DVA support, healthcare costs and where private health insurance may fit into your journey. We also offer a monthly transition newsletter, practical checklists and educational resources that break complex information into manageable steps, helping you build confidence over time rather than expecting you to learn everything at once.

If you’re considering private health insurance, Defence Health offers cover designed specifically for the Defence community. Eligible veterans receive an ongoing 7% discount on selected Defence Health hospital cover, and members transitioning from permanent ADF service can have hospital waiting periods waived for up to 120 days after leaving Defence when joining an eligible policy, helping provide continuity of cover during an important life transition.

Take the next step with confidence

Transition is a journey, not a single event. The earlier you begin planning your healthcare, the more prepared you’ll be for life after service.
Whether you’re exploring your options, looking to better understand how Medicare and DVA work together, or considering private health insurance, Defence Health is here to help.

Visit our Transition Gateway for practical resources, download the Healthcare Transition Checklist, or speak with one of our team to understand the options available to you. Because while your service may be ending, the right support for your health shouldn’t.
