Recruiting the next generation of Special Forces

The completion of the Special Forces Selection Course in May 2025 signals the transition to recruitment for the next group of Soldiers and Officers to join Special Operations Command (SOCOMD) in 2026.
Over the three-week Selection course, candidates demonstrated physical endurance and high levels of emotional intelligence during the arduous activities designed to assess their true character.
Members of the RAR rose to the challenge, performing strongly, with many securing positions on one of the Command’s Reinforcement Training Cycles.
There was a high calibre of diverse talent across Army, Navy and Air Force, with many individuals displaying the qualities and attributes suited to service within SOCOMD.
Continuing a trend seen in previous years, the majority of withdrawals were attributed to members leaving at their own request. However, a notable number of candidates showed exceptional mental toughness, overcoming the impact of injury, fatigue, negative thinking and intrusive thoughts during the most challenging moments. It was evident that all participants had invested a considerable effort in their physical and mental preparation over the months, and in many cases, years prior.
The SOCOMD workforce is expanding and we are always recruiting. There are now more opportunities than ever to secure a position and contribute to an organisation focussed on irregular warfare.
In addition to the selection process for SF Operators, a tailored recruitment and selection approach will be implemented this year for SF Engineer, SF Medic and SF Signaller roles. SOCOMD will introduce an Integrator-specific Selection course in late-2025 to adequately assess technical skills and suitability for these specialised roles. Tri-service and all-corps personnel will be eligible to apply. Further information is available on the DPN.
Now is the time to join a team united by the pursuit of excellence, professional mastery, and a desire to achieve a greater level of purpose in everything they do. Now is the time for ADF members from all services, corps and trades to take their careers to the next level and begin the journey toward joining in 2026.
The ADF School of Special Operations (ADFSSO) will continue the persistent assessment and screening model to identify and attract the most suitable candidates. The Special Forces Assessment Program (SFAP) will be held regularly at Holsworthy Barracks in Sydney to assess applicants when they are ready and available.
Candidates will conduct the Special Forces Entry Test (SFET), Special Forces Diagnostic Assessment (SFDA) (for specialists roles), education sessions, physical training and interviews. Upon completion, they will be advised of the likelihood of being panelled on the next Selection Course.
ADFSSO will continue screening non-ADF applicants via the ADF Careers entry pathway (Special Forces Direct Recruiting Scheme), offering positions to suitable candidates.
