From the skies to clinics; Dr Nelson’s mission to heal those who served

For 15 years Dr Tim Nelson fought alongside his mates in the cockpit of a fighter jet, now he’s fighting for them in examination rooms with a different type of weapon. Armed with compassion and understanding, the former Royal Australian Air Force pilot is on a mission to break down the barriers preventing veterans from receiving the healthcare they deserve.
In the Hunter Valley at the age of ten, Tim Nelson had a dream of being a Royal Flying Doctor, but as hornets whizzed over his head and pins and needles shot through his body, that dream shifted, he was going to fly fighter jets.
In 1999, Dr Nelson joined the Royal Australian Airforce, undergoing training at RAAF Base Pearce, before moving onto F111s at RAAF Amberley three years later. It was here he honed his skills as a strike aircraft operator and completed the Australian equivalent of the US Top Gun course, before embarking on an exchange program with the US Air Force Flying F-15E strike eagles.
It was a full circle moment when Dr Nelson returned home in 2010, becoming the first Australian trained student on the RAAF’s new super hornet, the F/A-18F. But that high was short lived, in a routine blood test, a nurse picked up that he had Type One diabetes and overnight he was pulled from the sky.
“Everything you hoped, planned, your dreams, just taken from you,” said Dr Nelson.
Dr Nelson had to shift to plan B, the plan he had as a ten year old boy. He transitioned as a medical officer. He completed his degree at Griffith University before working as a Junior Doctor at Tweed Heads Hospital, and then on base as a Medical Officer with the ADF.
On February 2 2022, Dr Nelson was medically discharged, after 22 years of service.

“My access to everything on the other side of the fence was now gone. I felt vulnerable, I felt alone and to be honest I felt afraid. A feeling I want no other ADF member to ever experience.”
The art of healthcare is being able to understand people and that is what sets Dr Nelson apart. It isn’t just his medical expertise, it’s his intimate understanding of the military culture that often stands between veterans and healthcare.
The struggle to navigate life after service, compounded by a lack of medical practitioners willing to understand the DVA claim process, struck a chord with Dr Nelson. As more and more veterans began filling his books, he knew that was where he needed to turn his focus, co-founding Front Foot Health.
The healthcare provider is not only veteran-focused, it’s veteran-led, with the majority of the team either veterans or coming from a veteran family. It’s the team’s lived experience that enables them to have a deep understanding of the DVA journey, allowing them to provide tailored services and efficient and accurate reports to ensure veterans get the outcome they rightly deserve.
The trusted clinical team now services every corner of the country. With gastroenterologists, dermatologists, endocrinologists and other medical specialists working together to support those in need of care.
“It’s been a real honour being able to make a commitment to those who made the same commitment as me to serve our country.”
The approach represents a fundamental shift in veteran care; empowering those who lost their voice to reclaim control over their healthcare decisions. After years of having medical choices dictated by military necessity, Dr Nelson is dedicated to ensuring veterans have autonomy.
“They deserve to be heard, understood, and treated as individuals rather than instruments of the government.”
Dr Nelson’s journey from the skies to the clinic embodies a powerful truth: service to our country doesn’t end with uniform retirement. He isn’t just treating veterans, he’s speaking their language, earning their trust, and helping them become stronger, happier, and healthier versions of themselves – a key component to living a healthy life.
“This is the way I feel I can make the most difference in veterans’ lives.”
“It’s looking after your mates, and I love it.”
