South Australia: A place to belong for Defence and veteran families

South Australia is more than a place to live for Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and their families – it offers support, stability and a sense of belonging for those who serve and their loved ones.
South Australia is the ideal location for veteran and Defence communities to thrive, offering a wealth of services and an unparalleled quality of life. Relocation is a part of ADF life, and South Australia has perfected the art of making newcomers feel welcome.
With a vibrant and well-connected Defence community, the state is home to nearly 48,000 people who currently or have served in the ADF, alongside their partners, spouses, children extended families and friends.
As the first state to establish a dedicated Veterans’ Affairs portfolio, South Australia is at the forefront of building a strong and vibrant veteran community. South Australian Government agency, Veterans SA, is at the centre of these efforts and is dedicated to empowering veterans and their families, offering a variety of programs and services tailored to their needs.
This includes the Veterans SA Career and Business Mentoring Program, which connects veterans and their partners with South Australian business leaders to help them achieve career and professional success.
The Veterans SA Tertiary Scholarships Program supports current-serving and former ADF members in their transition into new civilian careers, offering grants of up to $5000 to help ease the financial burden associated with pursuing tertiary study. Defence partners are also eligible, recognising their unique challenges and empowering them to invest in their own career development.
Veterans SA Director and Royal Australian Navy veteran Bianca Wheeler knows these challenges first-hand. Her experience is fuelling her passion to build a strong, connected veteran community in South Australia.
“Relocating can be a daunting experience for Defence members and their families, but it’s important to remember that you are not alone,” Ms Wheeler said. “Veterans SA, together with a close-knit network of South Australian organisations, offers excellent support to connect you with resources, community groups and programs to make the transition smoother for the entire family.”
“Every new posting brings with it a world of opportunities. The South Australian veteran community is here to help you embrace them.”
Beyond its support services, South Australia offers a lifestyle that’s hard to beat. From stunning beaches and world-renowned wine regions to a thriving arts and food culture, the state provides a relaxed yet vibrant setting for families. High-quality schools, welcoming communities, and a family-friendly atmosphere make it an excellent place to live.
