“They let you have a go,” Harry said. “That’s what I like — getting to do more stuff.”
It’s a simple comment, but it captures exactly what St Patrick’s Technical College’s mid-year intake is designed to offer: hands-on learning, real workplaces and the opportunity for students to start building skills and confidence sooner.
When Harry first stepped into the workshop at Gant & Sons during his Year 10 work experience, he wasn’t sure what to expect. Like many students, he arrived a little unsure and quietly took it all in. Now, after returning, he’s clear about one thing – this is where learning really clicks.
“I use bits and pieces from school,” Harry said, “but it’s really out here that I’m learning.”

Harry began his placements during Year 10 and continues to return, each visit building on the last. Instead of a one-off experience, he’s been able to grow his skills gradually, gaining confidence through repetition and real responsibility.
Another student, Lachie, shares a similar story. His first time in the workshop was nerve-wracking, but each return visit brought new tasks, more independence and a growing sense of belief.
“The first time was nerve-wracking,” Lachie said. “But now I get to do small jobs by myself. They teach you step by step, and every time I come back, I learn more.”
Lachie has now started a school-based apprenticeship, combining time at school with time in the workshop, allowing him to keep learning while beginning his career early.
For students entering St Pat’s mid-year, this journey can begin sooner. Instead of waiting until the new school year, students can step straight into hands-on learning, build industry connections and gain real-world experience from day one.
Behind these opportunities is a long standing partnership between Gant & Sons and St Pat’s, built on meaningful, repeat work experience rather than short, one-off placements.
Site supervisor Nick says that approach makes a noticeable difference.
“They start quiet on Monday,” he said. “By Friday, they’re talking, asking questions and getting into it. You can see the confidence build.”
For Nick, it’s not just about technical skill.
“It’s about character, curiosity and how they communicate. Do they ask questions? Do they try to help the tradesmen? Those are the things that stand out.”
He says students from St Pat’s often arrive with a clearer understanding of what’s expected in a real workshop.
“They’ve been here before, and they want to be here,” he said. “It’s one of our better ways of recruiting — and we’ve seen some great results.”
For students like Harry and Lachie, work experience isn’t just a glimpse of the future — it’s the beginning of it.
It’s also the thinking behind St Pat’s mid-year intake: giving students who are ready the opportunity to engage in practical learning earlier, build momentum and move forward with confidence.
Applications for mid-year enrolment are now open. For students who thrive by doing, there’s no need to wait for next year — start building your future now. Visit www.stpatstech.sa.edu.au and register for a College Tour.
