A powerful tribute to the unseen service of veteran families

It started with an embrace.

In 2015, during a theatre performance, a simple yet powerful moment of a wife supporting her returned veteran moved a solider attending the show so completely that he left the show at intermission, rushing home to embrace his own wife.

This profound recognition sparked a mission to acknowledge the thousands of families who share a similar journey, honouring the quiet, often unseen sacrifice of standing beside someone in service.

The families of our veterans serve too

The Recognising Families Sculpture embodies the enduring strength of families, parents, partners and children who serve without salute, standing resolutely beside their loved one in service.

When their veteran steps up, so too do their families – in the love they show, the support they give, the hope they hold, and the quiet sacrifices that keep home life steady.

At the Australian War Memorial, this sculpture will give form to that resolve and love,  recognising the often-unseen sacrifices of veteran families.

The van Beek Family

Navigating the world of Defence was made easier through the words of wisdom bestowed to Jessica-Hollie van Beek from her family who also served including her father in the Navy, and her sister and brother-in-law who served in the Army.

However, as a single mother to her son – who was born on ANZAC Day – it was the unwavering support of her mother who would drop everyone to look after him when Jessica was away on deployments and training exercises.

“My mum has always been there to care for my son during my long absences,” Jessica said.  “Whether it was ensuring he could continue to attend all his swimming and footy training over the years, spend time with family and friends, or provide the emotional support he needed – mum was there.”

Through the quiet service of her mother, Jessica has achieved career successes and been able to engage in opportunities and experiences as she navigates the demands of working within the Defence Force.

It’s this support that Jessica wants to pay tribute to her mum and son for – “I would not be the person I am today without my family’s support.”
