Faster decisions, stronger forces: SitaWare to support the Australian Army’s next generation of command and control

As modern warfare becomes faster, more dispersed and increasingly data-driven, the ability to understand the battlefield and act decisively has never been more important. A major Australian Army modernisation program is set to strengthen that capability.
Recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have demonstrated that battlefield advantage depends on more than firepower. Commanders must process growing volumes of information, coordinate forces across considerable distances and make critical decisions while communications are contested and threats evolve rapidly.
Against this backdrop, Systematic has been selected to deliver its SitaWare command-and-control (C2) software under the Australian Army’s LAND 4140 program.
The program will modernise the Army’s Land Command, Control, Communications and Computers (Land C4) environment, providing a foundation for the next generation of digital battlefield capabilities.

Turning information into decision advantage
Today’s battlefield generates unprecedented volumes of information from sensors, uncrewed systems, intelligence feeds and deployed personnel. The challenge is no longer simply collecting information, but transforming it into a clear, actionable understanding of the operational environment.
SitaWare helps commanders and their staff build a common operational picture, share critical information and coordinate activities across command structures.
Its capabilities are particularly relevant as modern forces move towards smaller, dispersed and mobile headquarters to reduce their vulnerability to detection and targeting.
Designed to operate in demanding environments, SitaWare supports information exchange over constrained communications networks, including low-bandwidth and contested conditions. Its ability to synchronise information following communications disruptions helps forces maintain operational awareness.
As Systematic’s Vice President of Business Development for Australia, Mark Gainsford, explained in recent commentary, the objective is to help commanders make reliable decisions and execute them faster than their adversaries.
Proven with the Australian Army and allied forces
SitaWare is not new to Australian soldiers. The Army first trialled SitaWare Headquarters during Exercise Talisman Sabre in 2021, with the software subsequently used in further Australian and multinational exercises.
Internationally, SitaWare Headquarters has been selected by more than 50 nations, including all Five Eyes partners, supporting interoperability between allied and coalition forces.
This established international user base is particularly relevant for Australia, where operations increasingly depend on the ability to exchange information securely with partners while retaining control over sovereign operational data.
Under LAND 4140, Systematic will work alongside Boeing Defence Australia, the program’s system integrator, and other industry partners to support the Army’s modernisation.
For Australian soldiers and commanders, the significance extends beyond a new software capability. It is about ensuring the right information reaches the right people, enabling coordinated action when time, communications and battlefield conditions are working against them.
On tomorrow’s battlefield, the ability to make the right decision sooner may prove just as decisive as the weapons available to carry it out.
